5 Days Morocco Desert Tour Itinerary

Day 1 Marrakech – Tizi and Tichka – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Skoura Oasis – Dades Valley appx 6 hours drive

Meet and greet at your hotel in Marrakech at 9 am start heading to the Atlas Mountains through the Tizi n‘Tichka pass, the direct route towards Ouarzazate. It is a spectacular and dramatic road that presents astonishing views of the snow capped peaks of the Atlas as well as many Berber villages. Upon our descent, we will arrive at the cultural heritage site of Morocco; the Ksour of Ait BenHaddou. It was once an important stop along the caravan routes that carried salt from the Sahara and on return, gold and ivory.
This is probably the best-preserved fortified Kasbah in the country. With its dramatic walls of red earth, slit windows and crumbling towers, it is a magnificent example of a traditional stronghold. Chosen as a location for Hollywood films such as Lawrence of Arabia, Jewel in the Nile, and more recently Gladiator, Ait Ben Haddou sits upon a lofty pinnacle of rock overlooking a river. Dating from around the 15th century, its importance as a trading post gradually waned, and today’s inhabitants eke a living from farming… and as film extras!
Then we pass the town of Ouarazazate and continue via Skoura Oasis and Rose Valley to Boumalne Dades

Day 2 Dades – Todra Gorge – Merzouga and Erg Chebbi dunes appx 4 -5 hours

We will meet you at your hotel in Dades and start making our way to the desert camp.  We will along the Rose Valley and then onto Todra Gorge, a spectacular gash in the hills that surrounds Tinerhir. The cliffs loom above as you approach the mouth of the Todra Gorge. Rising 300m, the honey-colored hues of the sheer face change constantly as the sun moves across the sky. Nomads can often been seen in the gorge. Many deserted Kasbahs, mud brick villages and green oasis, dot the whole area: A photographer’s paradise! Then we pass the city of Erfourd and onto Rissani reaching Merzouga and the magnificent apricot colored sand dunes of Erg Chebbi.

As evening falls we retreat to the comforts and luxury of our desert camp where we will be greeted with mint tea and fresh dates or nuts. The camp is set in a beautiful spot between sand dunes and gives the impression of being alone in the vast African desert while enjoying the comforts of a nomad king. We will enjoy a delicious dinner followed by campfire time beneath the starry African sky. Nothing compares to the millions of stars, silence and peacefulness of the Sahara. We sleep in luxury canvas tents feeling like we walk into one of the stories from the Arabian nights.

Day 3: Merzouga and Erg Chebbi desert dunes

After a sunrise Sahara Dunes photographic session, we will enjoy a first class breakfast and then head off into the vastness of the dunes on a camel caravan accompanied by camelteers. The sturdy camel has been a mainstay of desert life over the centuries, being used to ship the precious cargoes from Sub Saharan African to the trading ports of the Mediterranean coast. You can ride or walk alongside as you slip into the pace of the caravan led by Berber guides and marvel at the awesome spectacle of the desert and the solitude a silence that comes with it.

We can possible visit one Nomadic family living in the area.

We will enjoy picnic lunch on the dunes and then return back to the desert camp.

In the afternoon you can either do some sandboarding at the camp or relax at the many areas spread around the camp, read book/magazine. Or if you prefer we can travel to view the Dayet Sirji lake or head all the way back to Rissani and visit local souk there.

As evening falls down we enjoy 3 -course dinners and then special entertainment will be provided around campfire with music, drums, and singing from our Berber guides.

Day 4: Merzouga – Todra Gorge – Boumalne Dades

Leaving the desert behind we’ll head to the volcanic mountains of Sarhro, dramatic rock formation and gorges of superb views. This area is well known for fossils, mainly ammonites, which are plentiful in the mountains. Reaching the city of Nekob, where we stop for lunch, we start seeing the first palm trees of the Draa Valley a lush date palm oasis nearly 150 miles long. The valley floor is a verdant patchwork of fruit orcharges, vegetable crops, rose farms and of course date palm trees of 18 different varieties.

Day 5: Agdz - Ouarzazate Marrakech appx 5 ½ hours

Today we travel across barren gorges to Ouarzazate from where we set onto the mountains road back to Marrakech.
